See Na Hit Navigation Center

Located in Ketchikan, Alaska, the Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) See Na Hit Navigation Center is a crucial housing and community resource designed to serve tribal citizens and the broader community. The name “See Na Hit” translates to “light in the darkness” in the Tlingit language, a fitting name for a facility dedicated to empowering individuals through comprehensive support.

Project Overview

Ferguson Pyatt Architects, focused on creating a welcoming and functional building that centralizes vital social services and embodies the Ketchikan Indian Communities culture and values. The design philosophy was to create an environment that not only provides practical resources but also fosters a sense of dignity and community. The center aims to address the root causes of housing instability by connecting people with the necessary support systems in a single, accessible location.

A Design Rooted in Empathy, Community and Culture

Our design process for the See Na Hit Navigation Center was deeply informed by the principles of Trauma-Informed Design. This approach prioritizes safety, choice, and comfort to create an environment that promotes healing and avoids re-traumatization. We engaged with the Ketchikan Indian Community early on, conducting in person interviews and listening sessions with tribal citizens and staff to understand their unique needs and concerns. This collaborative process ensured the design would be culturally sensitive and truly reflective of the community it serves. To promote a sense of security, we implemented clear sightlines throughout the facility, designed a welcoming yet secure entrance, and eliminated potential triggers like dark corners or flickering lights. We also integrated flexible spaces and privacy options, allowing individuals to choose between quiet, private areas for reflection or more communal spaces for social interaction. . To enhance well-being, the design incorporates calming aesthetics with natural materials and colors, while acoustic control minimizes overwhelming noise.

Services and Program Integration

The KIC See Na Hit Navigation Center will offer an array of integrated services, with the architectural design facilitating a seamless user experience. Key programs include:

  • Case Management & Referrals: Spaces are designed to allow for private and confidential consultations, ensuring individuals can comfortably navigate available resources.
  • Housing Assistance: Dedicated areas provide support for housing-related needs, from applications to direct assistance.
  • Behavioral Health: Quiet, secure rooms are available for mental health and substance abuse support, offering a safe space for healing and recovery.
  • Cultural Resources: The design incorporates elements that honor and enrich the cultural heritage of the Tlingit and Haida Tribes of Alaska, providing a space for cultural connection and preservation.

The architecture of the See Na Hit Navigation Center is a testament to the KIC’s commitment to building a stronger, more resilient community. It is a physical manifestation of hope, and cultural resilience providing a safe and supportive environment for those on their journey toward stability and well-being.
